In a bold move to enhance food accessibility and sustainability, the Lagos State Government has announced the launch of a discounted fresh food market at the Fresh Food Hub in Mushin, ensuring that residents—particularly Muslim and Christian faithful—can access affordable nutrition during Ramadan and Lent.
This initiative aligns with the state’s five-year Agricultural and Food Systems Roadmap, a transformative strategy aimed at strengthening food security, sustainability, and economic resilience.
Speaking at a three-day annual retreat for the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, Commissioner Ms. Abisola Olusanya emphasized that Lagos is committed to sustainable agriculture as a tool for economic growth and social welfare. She noted that the recent decline in fuel prices has led to lower food costs, a trend further supported by the Ounje Eko Farmers’ Subsidy Program, which provides financial relief and resources to local farmers.
“Food security in Lagos is non-negotiable,” Olusanya stated. “We are actively engaging stakeholders to build a resilient food ecosystem that supports both producers and consumers, ensuring a sustainable agricultural value chain.”
The Ounje Eko Initiative is a direct response to the growing demand for affordable, high-quality food, especially in urban centers. By integrating modern agro-processing facilities and market-driven agricultural policies, the Lagos State Government is not only addressing food affordability but also empowering local farmers and agripreneurs.
Highlighting the importance of this transformation, Mr. Joseph Samuel, Chairman of Origin Tech Group, commended Lagos for its investment in agricultural sustainability. In his address on the Produce for Lagos Initiative, he outlined how the government is fostering a market-driven agricultural system that ensures food availability for all.
The retreat, themed “The Adaptive Edge: Lead Change, Connect Strongly, Thrive as One,” provided a platform for stakeholders to assess past achievements and strategize for improved service delivery. Dr. Rotimi Fashola, Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture, and Mr. Fatai Audu Emmanuel, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, emphasized that innovation and collaboration remain at the core of Lagos’ agricultural transformation agenda.
Additionally, Mr. Ope George, Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, addressed financial planning and budgetary considerations to ensure the sustainability of the state’s food systems.
As Lagos continues its journey towards food sustainability, the expansion of discounted fresh food markets and investments in the agricultural value chain demonstrate the government’s unwavering commitment to philanthropy, food accessibility, and environmental responsibility.
Through strategic partnerships and forward-thinking policies, Lagos is positioning itself as a model city for sustainable agriculture and food security, ensuring that no resident is left behind in the pursuit of a nourished and thriving community.
