The Federal Government has announced plans to disburse cash transfers to 2.2 million poor and vulnerable households across Nigeria as part of its poverty reduction efforts.
Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Tanko Sununu, disclosed this on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily. He explained that the beneficiaries were drawn from the National Social Register, coordinated by the National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO), which identifies the most vulnerable Nigerians.
“In the next few days, before the end of August, we are going to reach out to 2.2 million households,” Sununu said.
He noted that the government has already made significant progress through the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programme, with ₦419 billion disbursed to five million Nigerians. According to him, 71 percent of the funds have been directed to beneficiaries in the northern region and 21 percent in the south.
Sununu stressed that the initiative is aimed at providing immediate relief to families struggling with poverty while strengthening social protection systems nationwide.
