The NDPA provides a legal foundation. But ethical leadership requires more than compliance with consent clauses.
It requires transparency around data usage, clarity around cross-border data flows, and intentional protection of citizens in environments where digital literacy may be uneven.
Trust in Nigeria’s institutions is historically fragile. Mishandled data practices will not simply trigger regulatory fines—they will deepen public scepticism.
And in the digital economy, trust is capital.
AI Governance: A Boardroom Imperative in Nigeria
In many Nigerian organisations, AI remains perceived as an IT function—owned by technology teams, fintech innovators, or digital transformation units.
That is a strategic error.
AI governance must intersect with risk management, legal oversight, sustainability strategy, and executive leadership. Without cross-functional accountability, blind spots multiply.
Forward-looking Nigerian companies should be institutionalising AI oversight frameworks, conducting independent impact assessments before large-scale deployment, and integrating AI ethics into enterprise risk management structures.
This is not about slowing innovation. Nigeria’s digital economy is one of its strongest growth drivers. Fintech innovation, mobile adoption, and startup ecosystems have positioned the country as a continental leader.
But leadership without guardrails is fragile.
The global narrative is shifting toward responsible AI governance. Nigerian institutions that ignore this shift risk regulatory shocks, investor hesitation, and reputational crises.
Beyond CSR: The Credibility Test
Corporate social responsibility in Nigeria has often been associated with community development projects, scholarships, healthcare outreach, and infrastructure support. These remain important.
