The Enugu State Government has issued a stern warning to tanker drivers operating within the state for their failure to adhere to the color-coding regulations outlined in the Enugu State Water Sector Law of 2023. Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, emphasized the importance of these regulations in ensuring the safety and quality of water being transported, whether for drinking or industrial use.
Onyia underscored the government’s commitment to protecting the public from potential health hazards posed by unclean water sourced from unhealthy environments and distributed as safe drinking water. To enforce compliance with the law, a task force has been established to conduct random inspections of water being transported by tanker drivers.
Furthermore, Onyia emphasized the severity of penalties for violations, including confiscation of tankers and legal prosecution. The color-coding system mandates sky-blue for drinking water and yellow for industrial water, with clear markings indicating the nature of the content.
The government has provided ample time for tanker drivers to repaint their vehicles in accordance with the law, with the aim of preventing exploitation and safeguarding public health against waterborne diseases. Additionally, measures have been implemented to address the frequent destruction of water facilities and other public utilities, with a joint task force established to combat acts of economic sabotage.
The Enugu State Government encourages compliance with these regulations to ensure the continued provision of safe and reliable water resources for all residents, while also respecting the livelihoods of tanker drivers through creative adaptation to the new requirements.
