Ajayi Crowther University (ACU) is set to host the 9th National Conference on Food Security and Sustainability, focusing on food waste reduction, zero hunger, and the development of resilient food systems in Nigeria.
A statement released on Tuesday confirmed that the conference, scheduled for April 7–11, 2025, will take place at the Folorunso and Modupe Alakija Law Auditorium. Organized in partnership with the Sustainable Livelihoods and Development Network for Africa (SLIDEN AFRICA), the event aims to drive impactful discussions on sustainable agriculture, food security, and environmental responsibility.
Delivering the keynote address will be Prof. John Derera from the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan. He is a renowned expert in agricultural biotechnology, climate resilience, and food sustainability.
At a recent planning meeting, Prof. Muyiwa Popoola, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of ACU, represented Vice-Chancellor Prof. Timothy Adebayo. He emphasized that the conference aligns with global efforts to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This includes SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
“This event marks a critical step in ACU’s journey toward becoming a leader in sustainable agricultural research and education. We will explore the intersection of science, technology, and environmental stewardship in building resilient food systems that ensure safe, nutritious, and sufficient food for all,” Adebayo stated.
He added that the conference would bring together agricultural experts, policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders to discuss climate-smart farming practices, innovative food preservation techniques, and strategies for reducing post-harvest losses.
Dr. Moses Adebayo, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at ACU, commended the university’s leadership for its support in making the conference a success. He highlighted that discussions would cover circular economy approaches in agriculture, including organic farming, regenerative agriculture, and eco-friendly waste management solutions.
He also noted the pivotal role of ACU’s Seed Company, an initiative of the Vice-Chancellor, which is already collaborating with farmers and agricultural experts to enhance crop productivity, biodiversity, and sustainability.
“As Nigeria faces mounting food security challenges, this conference will serve as a catalyst for transformative policies and practical innovations that promote sustainable food production, combat climate change, and reduce food waste,” Dr. Adebayo said.
By fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration, ACU’s 9th National Conference is set to drive impactful change toward a more sustainable and food-secure future for Nigeria and beyond.
