The Anambra State Government has launched the “Operation Clear Your Waterways” initiative to combat flooding and ensure proper drainage management ahead of the 2025 rainy season. This enforcement drive will commence on March 31, 2025, with strict penalties for violators.
Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Felix Odimegwu, announced the initiative on March 18, 2025, highlighting its alignment with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s vision of transforming Anambra into a smart mega city. The project follows the Public Health Law, Drainage Management Policy, and Environmental Protection Laws to guarantee free-flowing water channels.
Citing the 2025 weather forecast from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Dr. Odimegwu warned that early and heavy rainfall is expected, increasing the risk of flooding. In response, Anambra has adopted a zero-tolerance policy for blocked drainages and illegal waste dumping.

He called on residents, businesses, religious institutions, market unions, landlords, motor parks, schools, estates, and shopping malls to actively desilt and clear drainage systems before enforcement begins.
The government has issued a strong warning: offenders will face legal action if they fail to comply with the drainage clearance directive. Additionally, all desilted waste must be properly evacuated to prevent re-blocking of waterways.
“To prevent flooding and protect public health, we urge every stakeholder to take responsibility for their environment. Together, we can build a safer, cleaner, and healthier Anambra State,” Dr. Odimegwu emphasized.
