In a significant step toward improving maternal health, APM Terminals Apapa has donated essential medical equipment to the Simpson Primary Healthcare Centre in Ebute Metta, Lagos. The initiative forms part of the company’s ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitment to enhance health, education, and environmental outcomes in its host communities.
At the handover ceremony, Frederik Klinke, CEO of APM Terminals Nigeria, described the donation as a reflection of the company’s dedication to raising community living standards.
“We are proud of this investment in maternal health, which will help increase child survival rates. We trust the community will maintain and fully utilize the equipment,” he said.
Steen Knudsen, Terminal Manager of APM Terminals Apapa, highlighted that the donation aligns with the UNFPA’s “10 Million Safer Births Initiative”, launched by Her Majesty Queen Mary of Denmark in June 2025. The project seeks to reduce Nigeria’s high maternal mortality rate by equipping healthcare providers with tools to deliver safer, more effective care.
Government officials praised the intervention. Dr. Abimbola Bowale, Permanent Secretary of Lagos Health District IV, described the initiative as a model of successful public-private collaboration, Your investment in Simpson Primary Healthcare Centre demonstrates visionary leadership. The community stands to benefit greatly, and this project sets a standard for others to follow.”
Representatives from Lagos Central Senatorial District and the Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board further commended APM Terminals for improving access to quality healthcare for mothers and children. Shakirat Adeosun confirmed that this donation and the centre’s renovation represent Phase One of APM Terminals’ health intervention, with Phase Two focusing on laboratory upgrades to boost service delivery.
Local leaders and healthcare staff also expressed gratitude. Dr. Tunde Osoba, Medical Officer in charge of the Simpson Centre, described the equipment as “life-saving gifts” and pledged responsible use and maintenance to ensure long term impact.
Layi Ogunjobi, Medical Advisor at APM Terminals Nigeria, stated that a consultant would monitor the equipment’s usage, maintenance, and impact over the next two to three years to guarantee accountability and sustainability.
Through this initiative, APM Terminals reaffirms its commitment to improving maternal and child health, demonstrating how strategic CSR investments can create tangible, life changing outcomes for communities.
