The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Bayero University Kano (BUK) Branch, has awarded ₦100,000 each to 18 financially disadvantaged students under its annual Indigent Student Scholarship Scheme.
Speaking at the award ceremony held on Tuesday in Kano, ASUU-BUK Chairperson, Dr. Ibrahim Tajo-Siraj, emphasized that the initiative supports academically outstanding students facing financial hardship, and is a core national programme of ASUU aimed at promoting inclusive and equitable education.
“At ASUU, we are not just lecturers, but mentors and builders of society,” Tajo-Siraj stated. “This scholarship ensures no student is left behind due to financial constraints.”
At the national level, ASUU awards ₦200,000 to two students from each of its over 80 branches across the country. The BUK branch supplements this by supporting 16 additional students with ₦100,000 each, raising the total number of beneficiaries this year to 18.
The scholarships are funded entirely through voluntary monthly contributions from ASUU members, a fact Dr. Tajo-Siraj highlighted with pride, noting the union’s belief in collective sacrifice as a tool for upliftment.
“Our members may not be wealthy, but we are committed to giving back. This scholarship scheme has run for over a decade,” he added.
BUK Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sagir Abbas (represented by Deputy VC Prof. Aliyu Mu’azu), commended ASUU for its impactful gesture and encouraged stronger collaboration with the university for greater visibility and institutional recognition.
Also present was Prof. Muhammad Waziri, Convener of the Scholarship Committee, who shared that the selection process was highly competitive, with over 100 applications received this year.
One of the beneficiaries, Muhammad Adamu, expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the students:
