The Cross River State Government has empowered 400 citizens comprising farmers and former members of the defunct Bakassi Defence Force with grants totaling ₦800 million, designed to foster self development, entrepreneurial growth, and productive engagement in agriculture and other ventures.
Each beneficiary, having completed intensive training on the Innovative and Integrated Agricultural Value Chain at CSS Farms in Nasarawa State, received ₦2 million as seed capital to establish and scale their businesses. The program is part of the state’s broader “People First” agenda, which focuses on wealth creation, employment generation, and promoting food sufficiency.
Governor Bassey Otu emphasized that the initiative aims to transform the energy of the youth from destructive activities into productive, development-oriented ventures. “We are investing strategically in human capital, turning potential societal liabilities into assets that drive community and economic development,” he said.
The Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Patrick Egbede, described the program as a landmark step in creating meaningful opportunities for citizens. He highlighted that the skills acquired through training would enable beneficiaries to contribute positively to their communities and the broader economy.
Beyond agriculture, the state has also trained 100 youths in ICT, particularly web development and programming, reinforcing its commitment to comprehensive youth empowerment and self-development. Monitoring committees have been set up across senatorial districts to ensure accountability and maximize the impact of the grants, with successful beneficiaries eligible for additional support.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Mary Ekuri and Solomon Essien expressed gratitude to the People’s First administration, pledging to use the funds to drive personal growth, wealth creation, and community development.
Through this initiative, Cross River State demonstrates how targeted empowerment programs can foster self-reliance, cultivate entrepreneurial skills, and strengthen the social and economic fabric of the state.
