In a bid to promote health, wellness, and education among young people, the Development Initiative for Youth, Excellence, Progress, and Stability (DIYEPs) has organized a sensitization program for students of Gwarinpa Secondary School. The initiative focused on menstrual hygiene awareness and the deeper significance of Valentine’s Day as a day of love, kindness, and compassion.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Courage Chigere Uchechi emphasized the importance of menstrual health education, stating that the program aimed to break the stigma surrounding menstruation and encourage students to adopt healthy hygiene practices.
As part of the initiative, students received sanitary pads and other essential menstrual hygiene products while being urged to speak out and seek help regarding menstrual health challenges.
“Valentine’s Day is not just for couples,” Ambassador Uchechi noted. “It is about sharing love, patience, and empathy with one another, fostering a culture of care and understanding.”
The initiative was met with high praise from school authorities. Vice Principal Bilkisu Ibrahim commended DIYEPs for the impactful program, highlighting its role in empowering young girls with knowledge and confidence. Similarly, the Principal of GSS Gwarinpa acknowledged the importance of addressing these critical issues, assuring students of the school’s commitment to providing a supportive environment for open discussions on menstrual health.
“We appreciate this timely initiative and will ensure our students are well-informed and empowered to take care of their menstrual health,” she affirmed.
Students also expressed gratitude for the program. Ajah Nneoma Faith shared how the session reshaped her perspective on Valentine’s Day, making it a day of self-love and care. Another student, Buba Theresa Tella, described the sensitization as “timely,” revealing how it has helped her overcome shame and absenteeism linked to menstruation.
By addressing both menstrual hygiene awareness and the values of Valentine’s Day, DIYEPs has taken a significant step toward fostering a healthier and more informed generation.
