EU opens €12.5M SUSI grants for Nigerian CSOs to drive innovative, inclusive social protection programs tackling poverty, inequality, and climate shocks.
The European Union (EU) has launched a €12.5 million grant program under its Support to Sustainable and Innovative Social Protection Programmes (SUSI) initiative, inviting civil society organisations (CSOs), non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and local actors across Nigeria to apply for funding. The goal: to strengthen inclusive, shock-responsive, and climate-smart social protection systems that uplift vulnerable Nigerians and reduce poverty.

The SUSI program aims to foster sustainable, people-centred solutions that address income insecurity, food vulnerability, youth unemployment, and the socio-economic impacts of climate change, particularly for women, children, persons with disabilities, and displaced communities.
Fighting Poverty Through Local Innovation
With over 40% of Nigerians living below the poverty line and social inequality widening, this grant opportunity places local stakeholders at the heart of building an inclusive safety net. According to the EU Delegation to Nigeria, the funding will prioritise community-driven solutions, innovative service delivery, and gender-sensitive programming.
“This isn’t just aid—it’s a strategy to empower Nigerians to build long-term resilience,” said Samuela Isopi, EU Ambassador to Nigeria. “By supporting local organisations, we’re enabling real social impact where it’s needed most.”

A Lifeline for the Most Vulnerable
The SUSI initiative arrives at a crucial time as Nigeria grapples with overlapping crises—from inflation and food insecurity to climate-related displacement and insecurity. By empowering grassroots actors with resources, the EU aims to close the protection gap for millions of Nigerians who currently fall through the cracks of formal social programs.
“The program has the potential to be transformative,” said Hauwa Mohammed, a development economist. “When local organisations lead, solutions are more sustainable, and communities truly benefit.”

Conclusion: Investing in Equity, Empowerment, and Resilience
With SUSI, the EU is not only investing in Nigeria’s development—it’s investing in dignity, resilience, and local leadership. As funding becomes available, stakeholders are encouraged to bring forward bold, inclusive ideas that can help redefine social protection in Nigeria, not as charity, but as a foundation for sustainable growth and shared prosperity.
