Stakeholders have lauded Better Environment (FABE International) for the launch of the FABE Institute of Sustainability (FIS), West Africa’s first e-learning platform dedicated to sustainability education. The launch, held on Thursday in Lagos in partnership with Deloitte Africa, aims to foster environmental awareness, climate literacy, and sustainable development across the continent.
Temitope Okunnu, CEO and Founder of FABE Foundation International, described the launch as the culmination of a decade-long vision to integrate environmental consciousness into Nigerian education and community systems. “Today, we celebrate more than just the launch of the Institute of Sustainability; we celebrate a vision that started almost 10 years ago in classrooms, school upcycled eco gardens, and communities teaching children that sustainability is not just a concept but a way of life,” she said.
The FIS is designed as a digital platform offering courses on waste management, renewable energy, sustainable finance, biodiversity, and green enterprise. “Built for Nigerians, by Nigerians, the institute empowers learners to address global sustainability challenges locally. When people understand the why and how of sustainable living, real change begins,” Okunnu added.
In her keynote, Deloitte West Africa Chief Sustainability Officer, Abena Biney, highlighted the partnership as a critical step in addressing the region’s green skills gap. “Across Africa, transitioning to sustainable systems in energy, agriculture, and finance is vital, but we lack the skilled workforce to drive this change. The FABE Institute of Sustainability is more than corporate social responsibility; it is a capability imperative,” Biney said.
Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, Titilayo Oshodi, praised the initiative as “an idea whose time has fully come.” She added, “FIS bridges knowledge and impact, empowering young Africans, innovators, and policymakers to develop actionable solutions that ensure progress and planetary sustainability go hand in hand.”
Dr. Desmond Majekodunmi, Executive Director of Lekki Urban Forest and Animal Sanctuary Initiative (LUFASI Nature Park), also hailed the launch as a transformative step for environmental education in Nigeria. “This launch is the springboard for a sustainability revolution, spreading awareness into schools and communities and cultivating a culture of environmental consciousness,” he said.
FABE Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to making sustainability a part of everyday Nigerian life. “Sustainability is not just a cause; it is a culture,” Okunnu concluded, emphasizing the institute’s role in nurturing a generation of Africans ready to drive climate action through education, innovation, and practical solutions.
