The Federal Government has introduced the Youth Credit Initiative — popularly known as YouthCred — under the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) to provide affordable financing for young entrepreneurs, starting with National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members.
Unveiling the scheme at the NYSC orientation camp in Abuja, the Minister of Youth Development said the programme would soon extend beyond Corps Members to the informal sector and underserved communities. YouthCred offers single-digit interest loans to help young Nigerians launch or grow small and medium-sized businesses.
The minister noted that the initiative underscores the government’s belief in the potential of young people to drive economic growth and innovation. He urged beneficiaries to invest the funds wisely and ensure prompt repayment, enabling more youths to benefit.
The NYSC leadership pledged full support for the programme, including integrating credit education into Corps Members’ training.
Established to dismantle market, structural, and policy barriers to credit access, CREDICORP aims to extend consumer credit to half of Nigeria’s working population by 2030, empowering citizens to grow businesses, improve livelihoods, and enhance financial resilience.
