The Federal Government has announced plans to create over two million jobs across Nigeria through the Renewed Hope Social Housing Programme—an ambitious initiative aimed at tackling the housing deficit while boosting economic opportunities for citizens.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, during a working session with the House of Representatives Committee on Housing and Habitat at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
Dangiwa described the programme as a flagship effort to provide affordable housing for low-income earners, the unemployed, vulnerable populations, and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). He revealed that 100 housing units would be built in each of the 774 local government areas nationwide.
Breaking down the job creation potential, the Minister stated that the initiative is projected to generate over two million jobs—calculated as 25 individuals per job cluster, 27 job types per location, across 77,400 sites.
Funding for the initiative will come from the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund. Dangiwa added that full details and budgetary frameworks would be shared with lawmakers once the National Social Housing Programme documents receive presidential approval from President Bola Tinubu.
To ensure sustainability, the Minister said a bill would be presented to the National Assembly to establish a National Social Housing Fund following the project’s rollout.
Providing an update on existing housing efforts, Dangiwa noted that projects from the 2022 supplementary budget and the previous year have been carried over and are being implemented in the current fiscal quarters. He assured that many of the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates are nearing completion and will be ready for commissioning within two months after fund disbursement.
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to using housing as a key driver of inclusive economic growth and job creation.
