The Federal Government has announced plans to inaugurate the National Building Code Advisory Committee as part of a broader effort to address the rising cases of building collapse across the country.
Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, disclosed this during the National Building Safety and Structural Integrity Initiative (NBSSII) workshop in Lagos, organised by the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development in partnership with the Lagos State Government. The Minister was represented by Permanent Secretary, Dr. Shuaib Belgore.
Dangiwa said the initiative represents a national campaign to curb building failures, lamenting that every collapse not only costs lives but also erodes public trust in government, professionals, and regulators. He identified poor design, use of substandard materials, and weak enforcement of building codes as key causes.
The NBSSII framework, he explained, will include a nationwide structural audit, a uniform inspection and certification system, stricter enforcement of building codes, and e-GIS mapping with real-time inspection reporting. He also confirmed that the newly inaugurated Ministerial Task Team on building failures will complement the work of the Advisory Committee.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented at the event, commended the collaboration as a step towards safer cities. He highlighted Lagos’ Certified Structural Integrity Programme (CSIP) as a model for other states, stressing that “we must build for life, not collapse.”
He urged joint responsibility among professionals, regulators, and citizens to ensure buildings in Nigeria are safe, resilient, and sustainable.
