In the wake of the Lagos fire tragedy that claimed four of its staff, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has instituted a comprehensive welfare initiative aimed at providing sustained financial and educational support to the families of employees who die in service.
At a memorial service for the deceased, FIRS Executive Chairman, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, announced the creation of a trust fund, automatic job placement for surviving spouses, and full educational sponsorship for the children of affected staff. The initiative is designed to ensure long-term security and financial stability for families, demonstrating the Service’s commitment to its workforce beyond the workplace.
“In FIRS, we are more than an institution; we are a family, When one of us is lost, we all feel the void,” Adedeji said. He added that the trust fund will be formally ratified and controlled by the families of the deceased, guaranteeing transparency, sustainability, and support that outlives any individual tenure.
The tragic fire at Afriland Towers on September 16 claimed the lives of George Faith Ekelikhotse, David Oluwafemi Sunday-Jatto, Onyemelukwe Nkem Agnes, and Ifaranmaye Peter. Survivors noted that poor fire response in the Balogun commercial hub worsened the outcome.
Deputy Manager of Tax at the Lagos Island office, Nasiru Usman, who narrowly escaped, called on government regulators to enforce stricter fire safety standards in high rise commercial buildings to prevent future incidents.
Dr. Adedeji emphasized that the FIRS initiative aligns with broader national development goals, ensuring that staff welfare contributes to a resilient workforce and sustainable socio-economic progress. He highlighted that honoring the legacies of the fallen staff through education, integrity, and professional excellence strengthens both the institution and the nation.
The memorial service also paid tribute to the deceased officials, describing them as “quiet achievers” whose careers reflected dedication, humility, and a commitment to national development.
By linking financial security, education, and staff support with a culture of accountability and service, FIRS is setting a precedent for institutional welfare that not only safeguards employees but also contributes to the nation’s long-term human capital and development.
