The Bauchi State Government has honoured five elderly citizens with cash rewards totaling ₦2.6 million in recognition of their decades of selfless service to their communities.
The gesture, announced by Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Hajiya Hajara Wanka, took place on Tuesday as part of activities marking the 2025 World Humanitarian Day in Bauchi.
Wanka said the initiative was designed to celebrate “unsung heroes” who have given their time and energy to the wellbeing of others without financial reward. “We have chosen five people, and I’m glad to say they are all deserving. Two of them were nominated through our radio programme. We presented awards of excellence and financial support to encourage them,” she explained.
Among those honoured was Dandada Ahmadu, Ward Head of Gwallaga, who has served his people faithfully for decades and received ₦1 million. Others included Isa Bagali, recognised for his daily visits to hospitals to comfort and pray for patients, who was given ₦700,000; and Babangida Abba, who received ₦500,000.
Also celebrated were Idris Baba, who has voluntarily cared for a maternity ward in Toro LGA for 20 years (₦250,000), and Malam Abdullahi, who devotes his time to maintaining a community mosque, fetching water for worshippers, and supporting the needy (₦200,000).
The commissioner stressed that the recognition was both an encouragement and a reminder that humanitarian service is at the heart of community development.
