Google has unveiled a major educational initiative offering university students in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe free 12 month access to its premium Google AI Pro plan. The initiative is designed to help students build essential AI skills, enhance research, and unlock new creative possibilities.
Through access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, Google’s most advanced AI model, participating students can explore cutting-edge tools that simplify complex research, improve productivity, and foster innovation.
Speaking on the initiative, Alex Okosi, Google’s Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, said the offer reflects Google’s commitment to democratizing technology and equipping young Africans with skills for the future.
“Africa’s youth are driving the continent’s innovation story,” Okosi said. “By giving students access to our most powerful AI tools, we’re empowering them to become creators, problem-solvers, and leaders in the global digital economy.
The Google AI Pro Plan for Students offers a range of academic and creative features:
Smart Research Tools Guided Learning and Deep Research help students summarise papers, generate referenced reports, and solve complex problems faster.
Creative Support: NotebookLM and Veo 3 allow students to organise notes, develop ideas, and create professional-quality videos for projects and presentations.
Ample Storage: Each student gets 2TB of cloud storage for coursework, data, and creative content.
Eligible students aged 18 and above can activate the free plan between October 7 and December 9, 2025, after verifying their university status.
This initiative builds on Google’s long term investments in Africa’s digital future, including programmes like Google for Startups Accelerator Africa and Digital Skills for Africa, which have trained millions across the continent.
By placing powerful AI tools in the hands of learners, Google is helping to prepare Africa’s next generation to thrive in an increasingly AI driven world.
