The Zard family recently held a memorial for late Chief Dr Raymond Asaad Zard, the respected leader of the Zard Dynasty, and his brother, Maurice. Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Archbishop Gabriel ’Leke Abegunrin of the Ibadan Archdiocese attended the event.
Archbishop Abegunrin praised Dr Zard for creating jobs and supporting many through philanthropy. Governor Makinde hailed “Uncle Ray” as an astute businessman whose road projects and chicken industry boosted transport and food security.
As founder of Educare Trust, I commended Governor Makinde for clearing unpaid pensions left by past administrations and for honouring late Governor Abiola Ajimobi by naming the University of Technology, Ibadan after him, showing political maturity.
Failure to pay salaries and pensions cripples families, breaks social bonds, and breeds restless youth who lose faith in work. When grandparents can’t afford small treats for grandchildren, respect and family stability suffer.
Governments must understand that the extended family has long been Africa’s “first bank,” providing help in times of need. Unpaid wages shatter this support system, leading to poverty, crime, and hopelessness.
Our leaders must ensure workers and pensioners are paid, so families and society can thrive.
