Amidst Nigeria’s pressing healthcare challenges, NNPC Ltd. is setting a new benchmark for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), addressing critical societal needs through innovative healthcare initiatives, strategic partnerships, and impactful community programs. Under the visionary leadership of Group Chief Executive Officer Mallam Mele Kyari, the state-owned energy giant is driving transformative change in public health, education, and youth empowerment.
State-of-the-Art Mammography Centres: Tackling Cancer Mortality in Nigeria
A flagship achievement of NNPC’s CSR efforts is the mammography centre at the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Lafia, Nasarawa State. In partnership with TotalEnergies Upstream Nigeria Limited, SAPETRO, CNOOC, and PRIME 130, the centre boasts advanced diagnostic tools, including the Senographe Pristina 3D mammography system and stereotactic biopsy capabilities.
The facility, capable of conducting over 120 examinations daily, significantly enhances early cancer detection and treatment in Nigeria’s North Central region. This initiative follows the successful launch of a similar centre at Garkida General Hospital, Adamawa State, further cementing NNPC’s commitment to reducing cancer mortality rates across the country.
According to Bala Wunti, Chief Upstream Investment Officer of NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services, “This initiative underscores our dedication to addressing critical healthcare gaps and improving lives.”
Nationwide Cancer Screening Campaigns
NNPC’s “Cancer Awareness and ZSX Screening” campaign exemplifies its mission to bridge healthcare access disparities. Targeting 3,000 individuals across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, the program offers:
- Free cancer screenings for breast, cervical, and prostate cancers.
- Health education workshops and consultations to promote early detection.
Mrs Emmanuella Arukwe, Managing Director of the NNPC Foundation, noted, “This campaign is about more than screening; it’s about creating awareness and saving lives in underserved communities.”
Expanding Access to Vision Care
NNPC and its Joint Venture (JV) partners have also prioritized vision health through initiatives like “Eye Can See” and “Vision First.” These programs provide:
- Free eye surgeries and consultations.
- Distribution of corrective glasses to underserved communities.
Residents of Imo State’s Ohaji/Egbema community and Lagos State’s Ilaje community have been direct beneficiaries, restoring sight and hope to thousands.
Education and Youth Empowerment
Beyond healthcare, NNPC has made significant strides in education and youth development, such as:
- State-of-the-Art Digital Library: Donated to Niger Delta University, Bayelsa State, in collaboration with JV partners. This 2,300-seater facility is equipped with advanced technology to support academic excellence.
- Financial Literacy Programme: Benefiting over 284,000 corps members, this program equips young Nigerians with entrepreneurial skills and provides startup funding to foster self-reliance.
Setting a New Standard for CSR in Nigeria
NNPC’s holistic approach to CSR demonstrates the transformative power of public-private partnerships in addressing Nigeria’s critical needs. By combining healthcare innovation, educational development, and youth empowerment, NNPC is not only improving lives but also redefining its corporate identity.
As the world commemorates World Cancer Day 2025, with the theme “United by Unique”, NNPC’s initiatives exemplify the global call for people-centred care. The company’s efforts underscore its unwavering commitment to building a healthier, more empowered Nigeria, setting a gold standard for CSR in the country and beyond.
