The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm, NNPC Foundation, has extended a helping hand to victims of the recent floods in Borno State. As part of its ongoing efforts to provide support during natural disasters, the NNPC made a significant donation of relief materials to ease the suffering of affected communities.
During a visit to the Borno State Government on Tuesday, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC, Mele Kyari, was represented by Danladi Inuwa, the company’s Executive Vice President of Business Services. In his remarks, Inuwa conveyed the company’s sincere condolences to the government and people of the state, offering words of empathy and solidarity in light of the tragedy. He acknowledged the devastation caused by the floods and emphasized the company’s commitment to standing by the people of Borno during their time of need.
The donation, which was made as part of NNPC’s broader humanitarian and disaster response program, included an array of essential items aimed at addressing the immediate needs of the flood victims. The relief materials provided to the affected communities were comprised of food supplies, toiletries, bedding, and other critical household goods. These items are expected to provide temporary relief to the displaced individuals and families, many of whom lost their homes, belongings, and livelihoods to the floodwaters.
Inuwa, speaking on behalf of the NNPC, emphasized that the company’s CSR initiative is not just about business but also about being an active and responsible member of society. “The NNPC remains committed to the well-being of Nigerians and will continue to provide support in times of crisis,” he said. He further reiterated the company’s long-standing tradition of providing relief to communities in need, especially during natural disasters, and highlighted the importance of fostering resilience in communities prone to environmental challenges.
The floods in Borno State, which were triggered by heavy rainfall and the overflow of riverbanks, have left thousands of people displaced and in dire need of assistance. Entire communities have been submerged, with homes, farms, and infrastructure swept away by the floods. The state government, alongside various national and international organizations, has been working tirelessly to provide emergency relief and to resettle the displaced families. In this regard, NNPC’s intervention is seen as a welcome gesture that aligns with ongoing efforts to alleviate the plight of those affected.
The Borno State government, through its officials, expressed gratitude to NNPC for the timely intervention. They acknowledged that the donated items would go a long way in addressing the immediate needs of the victims while efforts continue toward longer-term solutions. The government also called on other corporate organizations to emulate the NNPC’s approach, stressing the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing humanitarian crises.
NNPC’s donation is part of a larger strategy to enhance its corporate social responsibility footprint across the country. Over the years, the company has played a pivotal role in disaster relief, education, healthcare, and infrastructure development, reflecting its deep commitment to national development and social welfare.
As the flood victims in Borno begin the slow process of rebuilding their lives, the relief materials provided by NNPC will offer some respite, serving as a reminder of the solidarity that exists between corporations and communities in times of crisis. The NNPC’s gesture not only demonstrates its corporate responsibility but also reinforces the vital role of partnerships in addressing the socio-economic challenges facing many Nigerians today.
