The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Muslim Charity have formalized a groundbreaking partnership with the signing of a USD 1 million Memorandum of Understanding, aimed at combating human trafficking and modern slavery around the world. This marks the first formal collaboration under IOM’s newly launched Islamic Philanthropy Fund.
“This partnership reflects a shared commitment to human dignity and justice,” said Mohammed Abdiker, IOM Chief of Staff. “By aligning faith-inspired giving with global action, we’re creating real pathways to freedom and safety for the world’s most vulnerable.”
The collaboration comes at a time when over 50 million people globally are estimated to be trapped in modern slavery, including children, the majority of whom face forced labour or sexual exploitation. As global displacement rises due to war, climate change, and economic hardship, the risk of trafficking increases dramatically.
Irfan Rajput, Director of Programmes and Policy at Muslim Charity, emphasized the values driving the initiative:
“More than 1,400 years ago, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stood for the abolition of slavery and the protection of human dignity. This partnership is inspired by those timeless principles, and we are committed to freeing those still trapped by modern forms of bondage.”
The funding will strengthen IOM’s efforts in countries like Afghanistan, helping to prevent trafficking, protect survivors, and provide sustainable support for communities affected by displacement and exploitation.
Rooted in Islamic social finance—including Zakat, Sadaqah, and Riqab (supporting those in bondage)—this partnership mobilizes faith-based generosity for a global cause. Every dollar contributed through the Islamic Philanthropy Fund is distributed 100% to those in need, ensuring alignment with Islamic values of trust, transparency, and compassion.
As the Islamic Philanthropy Fund continues to grow, IOM is committed to building more partnerships with charitable organizations and individual donors to expand its reach and amplify its impact in the fight against modern slavery and human trafficking.
