Lagos State University (LASU) has officially become a beneficiary of OPay’s N1.2 billion 10 Year Scholarship Programme, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the fintech company and the university on Monday.
Under the partnership, 20 LASU students will receive fully funded scholarships annually, as part of OPay’s long-term Empowering Futures initiative, a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme dedicated to supporting academically outstanding but financially constrained students across Nigerian tertiary institutions. Speaking at the signing ceremony, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji Bello, Vice Chancellor of LASU, praised OPay for its forward looking commitment to education and youth development.
This generous act underscores OPay’s dedication to fostering academic excellence and supporting the aspirations of young Nigerians, she said. The scholarship will ease financial burdens and inspire our students to pursue excellence. This partnership reflects a shared vision between LASU and OPay to empower young Nigerians through education and innovation. The university’s Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel Fanu, also welcomed the initiative, noting its potential for lasting impact.
We thank OPay for this scholarship opportunity. While the full effect may not be immediately visible, it will transform lives and motivate these students to become valuable contributors to society, he remarked. Representing OPay, Elizabeth Wang, Chief Operating Officer, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to nurturing the next generation through sustainable investments in education.
Since our launch in Nigeria in 2018, OPay’s mission has been to make financial services more inclusive through technology. Education is the foundation of any society, and students represent the future. That’s why we are sponsoring 20 LASU students every year for the next 10 years, helping them pursue their dreams with fewer obstacles, Wang said.
She added that OPay plans to further support students through Cyberlabs and graduate employment opportunities within its workforce of over 5,000 employees, deepening the company’s commitment to youth empowerment and skills development.
The N1.2 billion OPay 10 Year Scholarship Programme highlights the fintech firm’s long-term vision to develop young talent, advance education, and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s socio-economic progress through consistent CSR efforts.
Established to make financial services more accessible through technology, OPay offers a wide range of services including money transfers, bill payments, card services, airtime and data purchases, and merchant payments. The company is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and insured by the NDIC, providing the same protection as commercial banks, and is renowned for its fast, reliable, and secure network.
