Lee Group Donates 100 Smart Bins to LAWMA
In a strong show of support for environmental sustainability, the Lee Group of Companies—a multinational conglomerate with interests in steel, plastic, and footwear—has donated 100 smart recycling bins to the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA). The donation is aimed at promoting the culture of circular economy and enhancing waste segregation efforts in Lagos State.
This development was confirmed in a statement issued by Mrs. Folashade Kadiri, Director of Public Affairs at LAWMA, on May 2, 2025.
During the formal presentation, Mr. Abiola Akerele, Operations Manager of Lee Group, explained that the company operates a recycling plant and is seeking LAWMA’s support for operational accreditation. He noted that the group had previously purchased and distributed smart bins as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts to advance a cleaner and healthier Lagos.
Akerele also revealed the group’s plan to procure an additional 100 smart bins for distribution to public schools, hospitals, and government institutions in collaboration with LAWMA. This initiative aligns with Lagos State’s broader strategy for sustainable waste management and environmental conservation.
Echoing this commitment, Lee Group Managing Director, Mr. Tunji Solarin, shared that the company was inspired to act following a compelling interview by LAWMA’s Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin.
“The interview struck a chord with us,” Solarin said. “We are fully committed to ensuring a cleaner Lagos, not just out of corporate obligation, but because it’s in our best interest as responsible citizens and business stakeholders.”

Solarin emphasized the importance of fostering deeper collaboration and stakeholder engagement to build a viable circular economy infrastructure across Lagos State. He pledged the company’s readiness to support the creation of more collection centres to aid efficient waste sorting and recycling.
Receiving the donation, LAWMA’s Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, expressed profound appreciation, describing the gesture as both impactful and timely.
“It is truly heartwarming to see that our efforts are resonating with corporate players like the Lee Group,” Gbadegesin said. “This partnership is a step forward in achieving our vision where every household in Lagos owns at least two bins—one for recyclables and the other for general waste.”
He highlighted LAWMA’s strategy to deploy more communal recycling bins, especially in densely populated areas and marketplaces, to reduce landfill dependency and mitigate environmental hazards.
Dr. Gbadegesin encouraged Lee Group to remain steadfast in its CSR and circular economy initiatives, noting that the sector holds over $2.5 billion in untapped economic potential for private investors.
“There are valuable resources in our waste streams,” he added. “Through community recycling centres, we can collect, educate, and aggregate recyclable materials, ensuring they are reprocessed into useful products.”
The donation and ensuing partnership between LAWMA and Lee Group reflect a growing commitment to sustainable development, corporate responsibility, and a cleaner, healthier Lagos for all.
