The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) has launched a specialised mechatronics training programme in Oyo State to equip Nigerian youths and technicians with the skills needed to repair and maintain petrol and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) tricycles. The initiative underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to fostering a new generation of skilled professionals capable of supporting Nigeria’s transition to cleaner and sustainable mobility solutions.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, NADDC Director-General, Mr. Joseph Osanipin, described the programme a collaboration with DAG Industries Limited and the Office of the Special Assistant to the President on Youth Initiatives as a critical step in empowering youths with practical, industry-driven skills. “This training opens doors to employment and entrepreneurship within the CNG value chain,” he said.
Osanipin highlighted that public awareness and technical proficiency are key to the successful adoption of CNG technology, emphasizing the importance of safety, preventive maintenance, and fuel system management. Trainees will also receive entrepreneurial guidance to enable them to establish service centres, with certificates awarded upon completion to enhance employability.
The DG further revealed that NADDC is establishing 21 Automotive Training Centres (ATCs) across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, many of which are already serving as CNG conversion hubs. These centres aim to promote international best practices, improve local technicians’ skills, and drive innovation in the automotive sector.
Osanipin lauded the Oyo State Government, DAG Industries, and the Office of the Special Assistant to the President on Youth Initiatives for their partnership, noting that the initiative equips participants not only with technical expertise but also transformative skills to become entrepreneurs and change-makers in Nigeria’s automotive and clean energy landscape.
Concluding, he reaffirmed NADDC’s commitment to shaping the country’s automotive future: “Together, we are building a strong foundation for a resilient, innovative, and sustainable automotive industry driven by Nigerian talent and ingenuity.”
