Transforming Education Through Environmental Sustainability
The Foundation for a Better Environment (FABE Foundation) has successfully trained over 30,000 schoolchildren in environmental sustainability, climate action, and circular economy skills through its flagship initiative, EcoschoolNg.
Launched in 2016, the programme equips young learners with green skills, fostering a new generation of eco-conscious leaders, sustainability advocates, and green entrepreneurs.
At the 2024 EcoschoolNg Closeout Ceremony in Lagos, FABE Foundation’s Founder and EcoschoolNg Convener, Mrs. Temitope Okunnu, emphasized the importance of collective action in tackling climate change.
“Over the past 10 months, students have engaged in hands-on learning, exploring waste-to-wealth solutions, conservation practices, climate advocacy, and eco-preneurial business models. Today, we celebrate a new wave of eco-ambassadors who are ready to drive sustainable change,” she stated.
The EcoschoolNg project is proudly supported by Aspire Coronation Trust (ACT) Foundation and Access Bank, reinforcing their commitment to sustainability, environmental education, and climate action in Nigeria.

Empowering the Next Generation of Sustainability Leaders
During the event, Mrs. Titilayo Oshodi, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, praised the students for their commitment to environmental stewardship.
“Since 2016, EcoschoolNg has empowered over 30,000 youths and women. You have learned to convert plastic waste into useful products, turn food scraps into compost, and promote tree planting initiatives. You are the superheroes our planet needs,” Oshodi remarked.
In support of the initiative, Dr. Gaji Tajudeen, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, described the programme as a game-changer in Nigeria’s green education movement.
“This initiative provides students and educators with practical sustainability skills, embedding eco-conscious values that will shape the future of environmental protection in Nigeria,” he stated.
Driving Long-Term Climate Action in Nigeria
Mrs. Abiodun Owo, Programmes Manager at ACT Foundation, highlighted the far-reaching impact of the EcoschoolNg initiative.
“FABE Foundation’s innovation in climate education and green entrepreneurship will lead to increased tree planting, organic farming, and reduced single-use plastic waste—key steps in fighting climate change and protecting our planet,” Owo emphasized.
As EcoschoolNg continues to inspire and educate future climate advocates, stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to environmental responsibility, innovation, and sustainability education.
Through continued collaboration, advocacy, and hands-on learning, the initiative is shaping a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future for Nigeria and beyond.
