Nigeria is stepping up its investment in the creative economy with the launch of a National Fashion Training Programme, aimed at transforming the country into Africa’s leading fashion hub.
The initiative is spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, in partnership with The Fashion Academy Abuja, as part of the broader Creative Leap Acceleration Program (CLAP). It targets designers, tailors, and fashion entrepreneurs eager to elevate their skills and grow their businesses.
The training will focus on two key modules:
- Pattern Making & Professional Sewing Techniques
- Fashion Business & Branding
According to the ministry, the curriculum is designed to empower participants with both technical expertise and entrepreneurial knowledge to thrive in a competitive global fashion industry.
“Our creative sector holds immense potential,” said the Honourable Minister. “This partnership reflects our commitment to building a skilled, future-ready workforce and positioning Nigeria as a fashion leader across the continent and beyond.”
This effort comes amid the rising prominence of Nigerian fashion on international runways—from Lagos to Paris—showcasing the country’s rich cultural identity and youthful creativity. However, access to structured training, funding, and global exposure remains a significant hurdle for many aspiring designers.
For The Fashion Academy Abuja, this collaboration offers an opportunity to close critical skill gaps. “We are proud to collaborate with the Ministry to train the next generation of fashion innovators and provide them with real tools to succeed,” said the Academy’s Director.
Applications open August 4 and close August 11 via clap.gov.ng. Selected participants will benefit from hands-on learning, mentorship, and access to business support networks to scale their impact.
The program is part of a larger push to harness the creative industries—fashion, music, and film—as engines of economic growth, youth employment, and cultural diplomacy. By investing in skills and innovation, Nigeria aims to reinforce its global reputation as a trendsetting nation and creative powerhouse.
