In a landmark collaboration, the National Library of Nigeria, in conjunction with the Zacchaeus Onumba Dibiaezue Memorial Library, has inaugurated the first-ever Green Library initiative in Lagos State. The unveiling ceremony, held yesterday, marked a significant milestone in the promotion of sustainable practices within the literary community.
The Green Library, situated in the heart of Lagos, stands as a testament to the commitment of both institutions towards environmental conservation and literacy advancement. This innovative project integrates eco-friendly features and practices, aiming to reduce carbon footprint and foster a culture of environmental responsibility among library patrons.
During the inauguration ceremony, dignitaries and representatives from various sectors lauded the initiative as a commendable step towards sustainable development. Speaking at the event, Mrs Esiri said the initiative aims at helping students understand the environmental impact of climate change.
The Green Library boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including energy-efficient lighting, solar panels for renewable energy generation, and sustainable building materials to minimize environmental degradation. Furthermore, the library offers a diverse collection of literature on environmental conservation, renewable energy, and sustainability practices, empowering visitors with knowledge to address pressing environmental challenges.
Describing the site as a academic, Esiri noted that the body, a -not -for profit organization decided to partner with NLN to create the library from children and young adults aged four to seventeen. She also made it known that the idea was to create a ‘Green Library’ where we can focus on the environment and begin to groom the children for them to have better knowledge and understanding on how to grow and sustain our planet.
Also present at the event was the Deputy Director/Branch Head, National Library of Nigeria, Lagos State, Mrs Obianuju Onuorah. In her speech, she said the initiative came at the right time. She also disclosed that “recently, NLN gave a directive that each branch should create a space for children’s library.
She however implored philanthropists to take a cue from the Green Library Initiative.
