The Executive Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Nureni Adeniran, has announced that the board is set to embark on large-scale construction and renovation of classroom blocks across all 33 Local Government Areas in the state.
Dr. Adeniran made this known during the Omituntun 2.0 Inter-Ministerial Briefing held at the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan. A statement from the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, confirmed the development.
According to Adeniran, the SUBEB has received approval to implement new infrastructure projects in public basic schools, building on the achievements recorded during Governor Seyi Makinde’s first term in office.
“The administration has significantly reduced the infrastructure deficit and improved the quality of education in the state through strategic investments in physical structures and human capital,” Adeniran stated.
Between 2019 and 2021, the state paid its counterpart funding to the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), which enabled a series of development interventions including the construction of 289 classroom blocks, establishment of 60 model schools, and renovation of 229 classrooms. In addition, over 13,800 teaching and non-teaching staff were trained, while over 22,000 pupil desks, 1,189 teacher furniture, 138 boreholes, and ICT tools including desktop computers and digital tablets were procured.
Highlighting further progress, Adeniran disclosed that Governor Makinde has already paid the counterpart funds for 2022 and 2023, attracting over ₦2.6 billion in matching grants from the Federal Government. The new phase of intervention will cover:
- Construction of 41 classroom blocks
- Renovation of 60 blocks
- Provision of seven perimeter fences
- Sinking of 30 boreholes
- Procurement of 5,828 desks and benches for pupils
- Provision of 473 teacher tables and chairs
- Distribution of 910 sports equipment
In addition to the UBEC-supported projects, Oyo State is also executing another wave of classroom construction using funds received as a reward for its participation in the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) programme, which focuses on reducing out-of-school children.
These BESDA-linked projects will include:
- Construction of 28 classroom blocks
- Renovation of 29 classroom blocks
- Building of four-compartment toilets with deep wells
- Sinking of 16 boreholes with tanks and tank stands
- Procurement of 2,922 pupil desks and 182 teacher tables and chairs
Adeniran emphasized that these efforts are part of a larger goal to boost access to quality education, noting that over 60,000 out-of-school children have already returned to classrooms since 2019.
