Polysmart Packaging Limited: Leading Nigeria's Circular Economy Revolution
Set to join other sustainability-conscious organizations at SISA 2025 for role in Driving Sustainability, Community Impact, and Economic Growth
In a country grappling with plastic waste and environmental challenges, one company is turning
the tide. Polysmart Packaging Limited, since its founding in 2013, has been transforming Nigeria’s approach to plastic waste management—demonstrating that sustainability and business growth can go hand in hand.
Closing the Loop on Plastic Waste
In line with its mission to advance sustainable industrial practices, Polysmart has built one of Nigeria’s most efficient post-consumer plastic recovery and recycling systems. Each year, the company collects and processes over 400 million used plastic bottles, converting them into food-grade recycled PET (rPET) flakes and resin. These are then reintegrated into new packaging products, creating a fully closed-loop system that reduces dependency on virgin plastics and prevents plastic pollution. This process also drives significant environmental benefits. Polysmart’s operations help prevent approximately 13,751 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, equivalent to removing more than 3,000 cars from the road each year. The system contributes directly to Nigeria’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) objectives and aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — particularly SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). “Turning what many see as waste into something valuable is not just good for the environment — it’s smart business,” said a Polysmart spokesperson. “We are proving that circular economy principles can drive industrial innovation, job creation, and sustainability across Africa.”
Boosting the Nigerian Economy
Polysmart’s impact goes far beyond recycling. The company is a major enabler of local economic development, empowering thousands across its recycling and packaging value chains. With over 640 direct employees, more than 600 dealers, and a nationwide collection network spanning 21 aggregation centers and 1,500 independent collection agents, Polysmart is creating inclusive opportunities for youth, women, and small business owners.
The Group’s activities have also strengthened local manufacturing capacity, reduced import dependence on virgin PET resin, and conserved foreign exchange for the country — positioning Polysmart as a key industrial partner in Nigeria’s sustainability-driven growth agenda.
Investing in Sustainability and Innovation
At the core of Polysmart’s success is its commitment to sustainability, innovation, and technological advancement. Since inception, the company has invested heavily in state-of-the-art recycling technologies from world-class technical partners including Erema, Sorema, and Tomra. These systems
ensure that Polysmart’s recycled products meet international food-grade standards, certified for use in beverage and consumer packaging.
In 2022, with support from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) through its Manufacturing Intervention Fund, Polysmart commissioned its first food-grade rPET production line — a significant milestone that expanded its recycling capacity to meet the growing demand for sustainable packaging in Nigeria and West Africa. The investment has enhanced operational efficiency, improved product quality, and
strengthened the Group’s role as a regional pioneer in circular plastics innovation.
A Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, Polysmart is focused on scaling its impact through expansion and collaboration. The company plans to:
Commission a second food-grade rPET production line by Q3 2026,
Expand its collection network to reach over 30 aggregation centers nationwide, and
Deepen partnerships with government agencies, local communities, and industry associations to institutionalize recycling across Nigeria.
Polysmart’s vision is to make recycling a mainstream part of industrial growth — reducing waste, creating jobs, and positioning Nigeria as a hub for circular manufacturing in Africa. “We believe sustainability is not an option — it’s the future of business,” said Polysmart’s Managing Director. “Our goal is to build a model where economic prosperity, environmental protection, and social inclusion work hand in hand.”
Recognizing Impact
In recognition of its leadership and social responsibility, Polysmart will be honored alongside other leading organizations at the CSR Reporters’ Social Impact and Sustainability Awards (SISA) 2025, scheduled for November 28, 2025, at the Shell/Zenith Bank Hall, Muson Centre, Lagos. The event, starting at 5:00 p.m., celebrates organizations shaping Nigeria’s sustainable future— and Polysmart’s story stands proudly at the forefront of that transformation.
