In a proactive move to address environmental challenges, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has engaged disaster management stakeholders in a comprehensive sensitization campaign focused on proper waste management and flood preparedness in Abia State. The event, held in Umuahia, was spearheaded by NEMA’s Owerri Operations and saw active participation from various sectors, including the ministries of Environment, Health, Works, Housing, security agencies, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, and civil society organizations.
Comprehensive Awareness Campaign on Waste Management and Flood Mitigation
The campaign, tagged “Awareness Campaign on Waste Management and Flood Disaster Mitigation and Response Programme,” featured a panel discussion aimed at promoting attitudinal change among the populace to mitigate the impacts of poor waste management and flooding.
Mr. Nnandi Igwe, Head of Operations for NEMA Owerri/Abia, highlighted the severe consequences of improper waste disposal and inefficient recycling practices. He pointed out that these issues have led to overflowing landfills, polluted oceans, and compromised ecosystems. Igwe emphasized the urgent need to educate communities on waste reduction and proper disposal techniques, noting that waste management and flood disaster mitigation are intertwined challenges requiring immediate and coordinated action from all societal sectors.
“We must build a future where waste is managed sustainably, and communities are resilient in the face of floods,” Igwe urged, calling for collaborative efforts among stakeholders.
Dr. Sunday Jackson, Executive Secretary of the Abia State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), echoed these sentiments, stressing that effective preparedness is crucial for prompt disaster response. He commended NEMA for the sensitization exercise and acknowledged the severe impact of floods on the state. Jackson revealed that the 2024 flooding had already claimed five lives in Obingwu Community, Ukwa West Local Government Area.
Expressing gratitude to Governor Alex Otti for his support in disaster management efforts, Jackson praised the governor’s proactive stance, describing him as a “disaster management-friendly governor” due to his active involvement in curtailing disaster impacts in the state.
