The Director-General of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed has appealed to corps members to always respect the rules and regulations guiding regimented life at the orientation camps.
The Director-General warned that posting of orientation activities on social media will not be tolerated just as sagging of trousers is against the NYSC dress code.
The DG gave the cautions within the week in Lagos as he addressed the 2024 Batch “A” Stream l Corps members deployed to Lagos State at the Iyana Ipaja camp that joined their counterparts nationwide in observance of the mandatory three-week orientation exercise.
A total of 4, 323 corps members comprising 1,757 males and 2,603 females are deployed to Lagos. Some are in Lagos while others are observing the orientation course programmes in Ogun and Osun states due to space constraints at the Iyana-Ipaja temporary camp.
He warned corps members to be disciplined while going through the orientation camping period and after camp, saying camping exercise is to imbue discipline that will serve as a guide to them when they are posted to their Places of Primary Assignments (PPA).
“Do not sag your trousers. In NYSC we have a dress code that must complied with. In camp, we instruct you when to sit, when to talk, when to eat, when to go to bed, when to wake up, and when to turn right or left. You are in a transition period.
“Do not publish any of camp activities on social media. Drug peddling, cultism and other related antisocial conduct are outlawed. Anyone that is caught will be decamped,” he warned.
Speaking further, the DG emphasised that part of the discipline in camp is for corps members not to lobby for redeployment but to accept their posting in good faith and positively impact the organisations and communities where they find themselves.
He assured that the scheme remains committed to the safety and security of corps members in every part of the country they are posted and warned against unauthorised journeys but carry out their primary responsibilities diligently.
He appealed to the corps members to embrace the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Programme (SAED) and other activities designed by NYSC to sharpen their proficiency and skills, saying these will prepare them to withstand challenges after school.
The NYSC 22nd DG commended the camp Commander and officials for the exemplary discipline and brilliant military performances by the corps within a short time.
As a reward, he declared a free day and donated four fat cows and some crates of malt drinks for the corps members.
Earlier in her welcome address and situation report, the Lagos State Coordinator of NYSC, Mrs Yetunde Baderinwa welcomed the DG and his entourage to the camp.
She reported that the Lagos State had lived up to the expected statutory responsibility to the scheme in the state, saying that corps members have been of good conduct since arrival at the camp.
Speaking on the management of the camp clinic, Baderinwa said the facility was functional with the support of health officials from the State and Federal Medical Centre in Ebutte-Meta and other corps medical personnel in the camp.
“We relied on the national grid for electricity supply. This is supported by a generating set donated by Interswitch. We have 2 boreholes that supply water for use at the camp daily.
