The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has launched the LUMINAH 2030 initiative, an ambitious program designed to educate and economically empower one million underserved Nigerian girls, positioning them as future leaders, entrepreneurs, and change-makers.
Speaking at the opening of a five-day program in Abuja, UBEC’s Executive Secretary, Aisha Garba, said the formal migration of LUMINAH 2030 from the Federal Ministry of Education to UBEC marks a turning point for sustainability and institutionalisation. Represented by the Deputy Executive Secretary (Technical), Razak Akinyemi, she explained that the initiative goes beyond schooling to address systemic barriers that have long kept girls out of classrooms.
“This initiative is not just about education; it is about giving girls the tools to participate fully in Nigeria’s economic and social transformation,” Garba said.
Built on the foundations of the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), LUMINAH 2030 combines education with skills development, caregiver support, and community engagement. The model ensures that girls not only remain in school but also acquire practical skills for entrepreneurship, vocational careers, and employment.
For Nigeria’s MSME sector, the program represents a pipeline of future-ready young women who will drive innovation across agriculture, fashion, retail, technology, and more. Across Africa, women-led small businesses already play a critical role in trade and innovation; UBEC’s initiative aims to strengthen that legacy by equipping today’s girls to become tomorrow’s entrepreneurs.
Garba reaffirmed UBEC’s commitment to working with state governments, civil society, and the private sector to deliver measurable results. She noted that the migration of the program is not a bureaucratic process but a transformational moment that directly connects policy to people’s lives.
With LUMINAH 2030, UBEC envisions a future where girls are not just educated but empowered where opportunity meets enterprise, and where small businesses continue to fuel Nigeria’s national growth story.
