The Faculty of Arts Alumni Association of the University of Lagos has announced the establishment of a N500 million Endowment Trust Fund, marking a landmark contribution to the Faculty’s 60th anniversary celebrations. The fund is dedicated to supporting students with special needs, providing scholarships for indigent learners, funding research and innovation, and implementing the “Light Up Arts Complex” solar project.
The initiative, spearheaded by the alumni, represents a major step in positioning the Faculty of Arts for future excellence. Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Francis Shonubi, said the fund reflects the alumni’s commitment to ensuring that the Faculty continues to thrive for the next 60 years.
“This endowment will strengthen infrastructure, fund research, and empower students and faculty alike, ensuring the humanities remain central to tackling societal challenges,” Shonubi explained.
Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor Akanbi Mudasiru Ilupeju, praised the alumni for their vision, noting that the endowment will provide critical support for education, innovation, and technology-driven humanities initiatives.
The anniversary, themed ‘Humanities as the Tech Solution to Global Crisis in 21st Century Africa,’ will run from October 19 to 25, 2025, and will feature academic, cultural, and social activities, culminating in a Gala Night and Award Dinner. Distinguished guests include the Vice Chancellor of UNILAG, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, and New Jersey-based lawyer and keynote speaker, Dr Elvis Labode.
Shonubi called on alumni, corporate organisations, and the wider public to join in supporting this honourable initiative, reinforcing the arts as a cornerstone of society and education in Nigeria.
