Gov. Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina State
In a landmark move to enhance agricultural sustainability and economic empowerment, Katsina State Governor, Mallam Dikko Radda, has launched a N5.7 billion Goat-Rearing Initiative. This ambitious project aims to position the state as a leading hub for livestock production while promoting environmental sustainability and social impact.
Unveiled in Daura Local Government Area, the initiative is designed to empower local farmers, particularly women, by providing essential resources, training, and support for successful goat-rearing. Governor Radda emphasized that the program will not only revolutionize agriculture but also uplift vulnerable communities through economic inclusion.
“This marks a significant milestone in our agricultural journey and a transformative step toward making Katsina a livestock production powerhouse,” he stated. “By prioritizing sustainability, we are equipping our people with the necessary skills to practice effective breeding, animal nutrition, and health management, ensuring long-term economic benefits.”

The initiative will benefit 10 women from each of the state’s 361 wards, enabling them to participate in sustainable livestock farming through support from the Ministry of Women Affairs and community-level committees. Additionally, the government plans to establish a state-of-the-art goat farm in Rimi Local Government Area to enhance genetic improvement, milk production, and manure quality, contributing to sustainable agricultural practices.
“This goat farm will serve as a center for genetic enhancement, high-yield milk production, and improved manure quality,” the governor explained. “It will also function as a breeding multiplier, an animal husbandry hub, and a training center for local farmers.”
Governor Radda lauded President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to livestock development and acknowledged the creation of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development as a pivotal step in modernizing Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
Echoing the governor’s sentiments, Special Adviser on Livestock and Grazing Reserves, Yusuf Sulaiman, underscored the program’s role in women’s economic empowerment. “By equipping women with the necessary tools and training, we are confident they will thrive as entrepreneurs and drive positive change within their communities,” he noted. He further announced the establishment of three livestock centers to facilitate treatment and vaccination of the distributed animals, ensuring animal health and sustainability.
The Emir of Daura, Alhaji Faruk Umar Faruk, commended the governor’s leadership and vision for economic prosperity. “Under Governor Radda’s administration, Katsina State has witnessed remarkable progress. This initiative is a testament to his commitment to transforming the state’s agricultural landscape and improving livelihoods.”
By integrating sustainability, economic empowerment, and social development, the N5.7 billion Goat-Rearing Initiative stands as a model for impactful philanthropy and responsible agricultural advancement in Nigeria.
