President Muhammadu Buhari has on Monday, commissioned the $1.5billion Lekki deep seaport for commercial operations.
He arrived at the facility in the evening in the company of Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Although Buhari was silent on what the nation stands to gain with its inauguration yesterday, project managers said the deep seaport, which is the first fully automated and digitalized port in Nigeria, would generate over $361 billion into the Nigerian economy and about $201billion in revenue to Federal, state government agencies from taxes, royalties, and duties.
The project, according to Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperative Dr. Lola Akande, was initiated by the presidential candidate of All Progressive Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to boost the economy of the state and the country in general.
Speaking after the commissioning of the project, Governor Sanwo-Olu assured Lagosians of hundreds of thousands of jobs as President Muhammadu Buhari commissioned the Port to commence commercial operations.
The port is adjudged the most modern and deepest seaport in West Africa, offering critical support to burgeoning commercial operations in Lagos State, across Nigeria and the entire West African region.
