plastic recycling
In a bold move to tackle plastic pollution, Nigeria has launched a $2.9 million advanced plastic recycling system. Funded by the Government of Japan, this innovation supports Nigeria’s transition to a circular economy and reinforces its commitment to environmental sustainability.
A Game-Changing Recycling Technology
Commissioned at Environmental Expressions Ltd. in Abuja, the project introduces high-performance plastic manufacturing equipment. It features:
- Laser Filter System: Removes impurities with precision.
- Sand Remover System: Enhances polyethylene processing efficiency.
These technologies, part of the UNIDO-led initiative “Promoting Sustainable Plastic Value Chains Through Circular Practices,” will significantly improve plastic recycling outcomes across the country.
Nigeria’s Commitment to Sustainable Waste Management
Balarabe Abbas Lawal, Nigeria’s Minister of Environment, emphasized the nation’s dedication to sustainable development. He described the project as a monumental achievement, underscoring the need to address the growing threats of plastic waste.
“This technology sets a new standard for responsible, eco-friendly recycling practices in Nigeria,” Lawal stated.
He also warned that unchecked plastic pollution continues to clog drains, degrade urban environments, and release harmful emissions through improper disposal.

Collaboration for Circular Economy Success
This milestone was made possible through a multi-stakeholder partnership involving:
- United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)
- Government of Japan
- Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Environment
Mohammed Malick Fall, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, noted the system’s potential to embed circular economy values into Nigeria’s waste management approach.
Hitoshi Kozaki, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Japan, echoed that view. He affirmed Japan’s support through its Green Growth with Africa Initiative and Osaka Blue Ocean Vision, which aims for zero marine plastic waste by 2050.
Local Industry Commitment
Habib Ahmed, Managing Director of Environmental Expressions Ltd., expressed gratitude for the global support. He highlighted his company’s decade-long commitment to plastic recycling.
“We collect plastic waste across Nigeria, process it, and supply various industries. This upgrade boosts our capacity and impact,” Ahmed said.
Shaping a Cleaner, Greener Nigeria
With plastic waste on the rise, Nigeria’s investment in advanced recycling marks a crucial step forward. Through strategic alliances and innovative technologies, the country is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable waste management in Africa.
This development not only upgrades recycling infrastructure—it paves the way for a cleaner, greener, and more resilient future.
