Farmers across Nigeria are calling for the urgent implementation of the federal government’s Post-Harvest Policy, following the recent launch of Agribusiness Hubs aimed at reducing post-harvest losses.
They believe the policy will play a critical role in enhancing agricultural productivity, improving market value for farm produce, and safeguarding livelihoods.
Speaking on the matter, farmer Alhaji Kaita stressed the urgency:
“We urgently need the post-harvest loss policy as climate change is already taking a toll on us. If implemented effectively, it will serve as a form of insurance against unpredictable weather conditions that threaten our yields.”
Similarly, farmer Yemisi Ojo urged the government to ensure inclusivity in its rollout:
“All farmers — from smallholders to large-scale producers — should be part of the implementation process to make it truly impactful.”
Vice President Kashim Shettima recently commissioned the Agribusiness Hubs in Oyo State, noting the initiative is designed to tackle post-harvest waste and spur agricultural growth. The hubs will host over 40 agribusiness ventures, create more than 100,000 jobs directly and indirectly, and support over 500,000 farmers nationwide.
The push from farmers underscores the need for swift policy action to reduce losses, improve food security, and strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural value chain.
