African engineering innovators can win up to £50,000, receive world-class mentorship, business acceleration support, and access to a global network of investors and industry experts.
Applications are now open for the 2027 Royal Academy of Engineering Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation, one of Africa’s leading competitions dedicated to supporting engineering-led innovations that solve local challenges and improve lives across sub-Saharan Africa.
The annual programme is designed to help innovators transform promising engineering solutions into commercially viable businesses through intensive business support, technical mentoring, and funding opportunities.
Programme Benefits
Up to 16 shortlisted innovators will receive:
- An eight-month tailored business acceleration programme
- Two fully funded training program, including one in the United Kingdom and another in a major African city
- Business and technical mentorship from leading engineering and industry experts
- Media and communications support to raise the visibility of their innovations
- Access to the Royal Academy of Engineering’s global network of investors, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders
- The opportunity to pitch at the Africa Prize Showcase
- Cash prizes, including £50,000 for the overall winner
Who Can Apply?
Applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be a citizen of a sub-Saharan African country
- Be ordinarily resident in sub-Saharan Africa (temporary overseas study is permitted)
- Apply individually or as the lead representative of a team
- Demonstrate proficiency in English and submit their application in English
- Present an engineering innovation with strong commercial potential and positive social or environmental impact
- Meet the programme’s eligibility requirements regarding previous participation in the Academy’s innovation programmes
Application Process
The competition is conducted in two stages:
Stage One: Applicants submit information about their engineering innovation, technical documentation, and supporting materials for technical assessment.
Stage Two: Longlisted applicants will be invited to provide detailed business information, including market analysis, financial projections, and commercialisation strategies before the final shortlist is selected.
Application Deadline
Applications close on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, at 4:00 p.m. (UTC+1). Shortlisted innovators will be announced later in the year before participating in the eight-month acceleration programme leading to the 2027 Africa Prize finals.
