Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu has reaffirmed Lagos State’s leadership role in driving climate-responsive urban development and green building practices in Nigeria. Represented by his Special Adviser on electronic Geographic Information System and Urban Development, Olajide Babatunde, at a workshop organised by the Green Building Council Nigeria (GBCN), the governor stressed that Lagos remains at the forefront of sustainable city reforms and climate smart growth strategies.
Sanwo-Olu noted that Lagos has consistently championed the adoption of sustainable energy solutions, green infrastructure, and resilient building practices, working with partners to create scalable solutions that can be replicated nationwide. He urged collective action ahead of Nigeria’s presentation of its climate progress at stressing the need for measurable impact, not just policies on paper.
“Lagos is ready to share lessons, tools, and frameworks to support other states in implementing the national climate action plan. But to achieve lasting results, we must move together and act with urgency,” he stated.
Leaders of the GBCN, including its President, Danjuma Waniko, and Director of Research and Innovation, Omoyemi Olayiwola, lauded Lagos’ pioneering role, noting that Nigeria’s participation in the global Be Bold on Buildings campaign demonstrates the country’s commitment to ensuring the built environment becomes a driver of climate solutions rather than part of the problem.
They emphasised that with buildings responsible for nearly 40% of global energy-related emissions, the urgency of bold and coordinated action is paramount.
By reaffirming this commitment, Lagos is positioning itself not only as Nigeria’s climate-smart hub but also as a continental model for green urban growth and resilient development.
