Building Bridges: Empowering Nigerian Creatives to Tackle Tribalism and Religious Bigotry Through Art
As part of a bold effort to foster unity and social cohesion in Nigeria, the Simply Poetry Foundation, in partnership with the Dike Chukwumerije Center and with support from the Ford Foundation, has launched the Building Bridges Project for Creatives—a transformative training initiative aimed at empowering artists to challenge divisive narratives through their craft.
This 8-week program is designed for socially conscious creatives between the ages of 18 and 40, residing in Nigeria, who are passionate about using art to promote inclusion and peace. Participants will undergo six weeks of virtual training, followed by an immersive two-week residency in Abuja.
Targeting a diverse range of artistic disciplines—including spoken word, dance, music, visual arts, film, and theatre—the program aims to equip participants with the tools to craft compelling, socially impactful work that addresses deep-seated issues like tribalism and religious intolerance.
“This is more than just a creative workshop—it’s a social responsibility initiative rooted in nation-building,” said a spokesperson for the Simply Poetry Foundation. “We believe artists can be powerful agents of change, and this program is about giving them the platform and the support to shape a more united Nigeria.”
Eligibility Criteria:
- Nigerian resident aged 18–40
- Skilled in at least one creative discipline (spoken word, dance, music, film/theatre production, scriptwriting, or visual arts)
- Deeply committed to using art to address social divisions, especially tribal and religious conflicts
- Available for online learning from May 31 – July 13, 2025
- Able to attend the in-person Abuja residency from July 14 – 27, 2025
With the May 20 deadline fast approaching, the organizers encourage young creatives who view their art as a tool for advocacy, healing, and national progress to apply.
By investing in creative talent to drive social change, the Building Bridges Project exemplifies the role of arts and culture in advancing Corporate Social Responsibility goals, promoting diversity, and fostering peaceful coexistence in a multicultural society.
