The Development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC), has trained 150 teachers in the Federal Capital Territory on digital literacy, donated a fully equipped ICT laboratory, and awarded 20 scholarships to indigent students, demonstrating its commitment to education and community development.
This initiative, funded through a N5 million grant to the Rising Hope Girls’ Educational Foundation, is part of a broader effort to establish digital laboratories in ten underserved communities, bridge the digital divide, and combat school-related gender-based violence.
Speaking at the commissioning of the ICT lab at Junior Secondary School, Chikakore, Kubwa, dRPC Executive Director Dr. Judith Ann Walker emphasized that the project aims to empower young girls in marginalized communities with digital skills, enhancing both learning and safety in schools. Represented by the Centre’s Director of Partnerships, Hassan Karofi, she added that the NGO Support Initiative was launched to support indigenous organisations affected by recent reductions in overseas funding.
Project Director of Rising Hope Girls’ Educational Foundation, David Ahanor, highlighted that the ICT labs, equipped with computers, internet modems, and whiteboards, serve as hubs for learning, creativity, and advocacy against gender-based violence. “Before this project, many schools faced challenges due to limited digital resources and under-resourced teachers. Today, students are confident using technology to enhance their learning and advocate for their rights,” he said.
So far, the programme has supported over 500 students through digital training and sensitization campaigns, while engaging more than 400 parents and youths in community outreach efforts. The Principal of JSS Chikakore, Ishaya Dogo, described the initiative as a “beacon of hope” for children in hard-to-reach communities.
The Acting Executive Chairman of the Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Alhassan Sule, represented by Deputy Director, Curriculum, Nsa Rabo, praised the collaboration, noting that quality computer education requires joint efforts between government and development partners.
The event was attended by executives of the school’s Parents Teachers Association, the Chief of Chikakore community, John Azaecheyi, and other palace officials, underscoring the strong community support for the project.
