The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has reiterated its dedication to addressing clean water challenges in Ogoniland on world water day 2025, aligning with global efforts to preserve freshwater resources.
Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, Project Coordinator of HYPREP, made this commitment in a statement commemorating the 2025 World Water Day on March 22. He emphasized that access to potable water remains a crucial part of HYPREP’s environmental restoration mandate.
“As we mark World Water Day on March 22, we reaffirm our commitment to tackling the water challenges faced by hydrocarbon-impacted communities in Ogoniland,” Zabbey stated.
This year’s theme, “Glacier Preservation,” highlights the urgency of protecting the world’s freshwater sources, which are essential for sustaining ecosystems, supporting human life, and regulating the climate. Zabbey noted that preserving glaciers is critical, as they serve as a primary freshwater source for millions globally.

HYPREP’s Commitment to Clean Water and Environmental Restoration
HYPREP’s ongoing efforts to provide potable water form a key aspect of its mission to remediate and restore Ogoniland’s environment. Zabbey reiterated the project’s focus on ensuring clean water access, particularly for communities impacted by hydrocarbon pollution.
He also called for broader collaboration from government agencies, international organisations, and local stakeholders to support these restoration efforts.
“The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Report on Ogoniland provided clear recommendations for restoring contaminated water sources, and HYPREP remains steadfast in implementing these recommendations,” he added.
As part of its commitment to improving water accessibility, HYPREP recently inaugurated new water facilities in Bunu and Beeri communities. This development has increased the number of Ogoni communities with access to potable water to 30, reinforcing the project’s impact on affected areas.
HYPREP continues to work towards achieving long-term environmental sustainability and peacebuilding in the Niger Delta, ensuring that clean water remains a fundamental right for all communities in the region.
