Lagos State is strengthening its position as a hub for innovation and technology by awarding N75 million in grants to 15 trailblazing innovators, researchers, and entrepreneurs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
Through the Lagos State Science, Research and Innovation Council (LASRIC), each recipient secured N5 million under the sixth cohort of its grant programme, designed to support impactful solutions addressing real-world challenges locally and globally. The awards were split across three categories—research, innovation, and STEM with five winners in each.
Projects recognised include transforming invasive plants into valuable resources, developing multimodal smart cards for tourists, blending herbal medicine with modern science, advancing sustainable food systems, producing affordable prosthetics, digitising African languages for AI, and creating inclusive financial products.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Secretary to the State Government Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, described the initiative as a celebration of bold thinking and problem-solving leadership. He reaffirmed that innovation is central to the state’s T.H.E.M.E.S+ agenda, which prioritises technology as a driver of economic resilience, youth empowerment, and inclusive growth.
LASRIC Chairman, Prof. Olumuyiwa Odusanya, stressed that no nation can achieve true development without investing in research and innovation.
With this funding, Lagos joins a growing number of African cities leveraging science and technology to boost job creation, skill development, and global competitiveness.
