LAWMA's Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has announced strategic measures to tackle the environmental impact of Lagos State’s daily generation of 1,040 tonnes of textile waste.
Speaking at an event commemorating International Zero Waste Day, LAWMA’s Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, emphasized the agency’s commitment to reducing textile waste in line with this year’s theme, “Towards Zero Waste in Fashion and Textiles.”
Gbadegesin highlighted that textile waste accounts for approximately 8% of the 13,000 tonnes of waste generated daily in Lagos. To address this challenge, LAWMA is set to ban textile waste from landfills across the state and establish a structured collection system. As part of this initiative, the agency will collaborate with Tejuosho Market in Yaba to collect textile waste, ensuring its proper transfer to recycling companies for processing.
Furthermore, the LAWMA Academy is actively training students to upcycle textile waste into functional products, fostering sustainability while creating economic opportunities for Lagos residents.

Reaffirming LAWMA’s commitment to achieving a zero-waste future, Gbadegesin stressed the importance of adopting sustainable waste management practices.
“The International Zero Waste Day serves as a crucial reminder of our collective responsibility to safeguard the environment by implementing sustainable waste disposal methods,” he said. “At LAWMA, we are dedicated to enforcing policies that support zero waste principles, including waste sorting, recycling, and waste-to-energy initiatives.”
He further called on all Lagosians to actively participate in responsible waste disposal, emphasizing that the success of these initiatives depends on collective action.
With these decisive steps, LAWMA aims to significantly reduce the environmental footprint of textile waste while contributing to global efforts in sustainable waste management.
