MCI Empowers 200 Less-privileged
Mercy Crystal Initiative (MCI), has empowered about 200 less-privileged persons in Ketu, Kosofe Local Council of Lagos State.
The beneficiaries got free computer training, cash gifts, Point of Sale (POS) machines and other tools to start small businesses. President of MCI, Adejuyigbe Adesanmi, said the empowerment was to give the people a sense of belonging.
He said: “Mercy Crystal helps the less-privileged, the widows and the youths. We get them employed to become independent. Instead of constituting nuisance to the community, we want them to have a sense of belonging.”
According to Adesanmi, a pastor, the NGO encourages those interested in the computer training by establishing them financially to be their own boss.
He added that “the organisation moves along the streets of Lagos” to help the needy. Secretary General of the organisation, Rosemary Amadi, said: “We just want to make a difference. When people hear NGO, they think of an organisation that just wants to get funds (especially from foreign donors); but we want to change that narrative.”
She noted that the funds used to run the empowerment were raised in-house.
“We are hoping that we get supporters, sponsors and partners, so we can do better. We want to create something different. As we are blessed, we bless others. So, we believe in empowering people, to alleviate poverty from the community,” Amadi stated.
A beneficiary, Folashade Ojomo, thanked the organisation for the gesture and promised to make judicious use of whatever she received from the programme.
