In a powerful show of compassion and service beyond the battlefield, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has touched thousands of lives in Imo State through a large-scale medical outreach that provided free healthcare to 11,231 people and 846 life-changing surgeries.
The initiative, carried out in Mbaise and surrounding communities, was part of the NAF’s ongoing commitment to strengthening Civil-Military Relations (CMR). Partnering with Nwagwu’s Health Initiative, the outreach ran throughout August 2025, bringing not only healing but also renewed hope to residents who often lack access to critical medical services.
According to Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the outreach didn’t just offer treatment — it restored dignity and mobility. Over 1,300 eyeglasses, walking aids, and crutches were distributed to individuals with disabilities, making it clear why NAF continues to be known as “The People’s Air Force.”
In his heartfelt message, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, emphasized that the military’s duty goes far beyond protecting the skies.
“The Nigerian Air Force is not only about defending territorial integrity. We are deeply committed to easing the burden of our people, especially in underserved communities. This outreach reflects our philosophy of putting people first,” he said.
The impact was widespread and deeply felt. Among the 846 surgeries performed were:
63 thyroidectomies
118 gynecological procedures
434 general surgeries
331 eye surgeries
In addition, over 9,000 general medical consultations and 2,177 eye consultations were conducted. But perhaps most meaningful were the health education sessions on maternal health, hygiene, and disease prevention equipping communities with the knowledge to stay healthy long after the outreach ends.
Air Vice Marshal Ibikunle Daramola, Chief of Civil-Military Relations, noted that this initiative reflects a broader vision for national development.
“Every cataract restored, every hernia repaired, every family uplifted by this intervention reminds us that we are more than just a fighting force. We are partners in building a healthier, stronger Nigeria.”
AVM Uche Nwagwu, who coordinated the project, praised the seamless collaboration between NAF and local stakeholders.
“This was made possible by shared dedication and trust. The joy on the faces of those we helped is our greatest reward. We look forward to reaching even more communities in the future.”
This outreach stands as a moving reminder that when service meets compassion, lives are not only changed they are transformed.
