In a landmark move to combat climate change and spark inclusive economic growth, the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) has launched the 1 Billion Economic Trees Planting Campaign a national initiative aimed at restoring degraded land, creating jobs, and accelerating the development of Nigeria’s green economy.
More than just a tree-planting drive, the campaign is a strategic effort to merge environmental restoration with economic opportunity, unlocking new value chains in agriculture, renewable energy, agro-processing, and sustainable manufacturing.
According to NACCIMA, planting “economic trees”—which produce valuable fruits, seeds, oils, or timber will not only replenish ecosystems but also serve as critical raw materials for local industries, enhance food security, and support the livelihoods of millions, especially in rural communities.
“This campaign is aligned with the Federal Government’s $1 trillion economy vision,” the association said. “It offers an innovative approach to drive industrial output while regenerating natural resources and empowering small businesses.”
Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are expected to benefit directly from roles in seedling production, nursery management, packaging, logistics, and the export of tree-based products. NACCIMA stressed that youth, women, cooperatives, and local communities will be central to the programme’s implementation, ensuring inclusive growth at the grassroots.
To scale the initiative nationwide, NACCIMA is working in partnership with government agencies, international development partners, and private sector investors.
The campaign will also complement the Federal Government’s Great Green Wall project, which is focused on reversing desertification and promoting climate-smart agriculture across the Sahel. Together, these efforts will increase Nigeria’s climate resilience, restore vital ecosystems, and boost the competitiveness of Nigerian businesses in global green markets.
Calling on the private sector, civil society, and everyday Nigerians to support the effort, NACCIMA highlighted the broader vision:
“Our path to sustainable wealth creation must be green, inclusive, and collaborative. By planting economic trees today, we are building a stronger, healthier, and more competitive Nigeria for tomorrow.”
