A few years ago, deepfakes were dismissed as amusing internet experiments people swapping faces in videos or creating celebrity impersonations for social media laughs. Today, they have evolved into one of the most dangerous tools in the cybercriminal’s arsenal, with real-world consequences for businesses, governments, and individuals.
In my recent speaking engagement at WiCyS UK+I, I highlighted how deepfakes are no longer just entertainment but have become a growing cybersecurity threat. During that session, I explained how malicious actors are using AI-driven synthetic media for fraud,
misinformation, and even large-scale social engineering attacks. These risks, which were once theoretical, are now very real and are forcing businesses to rethink how they manage trust in the digital age.
From financial scams to corporate espionage, deepfakes are no longer just a novelty. They represent a fast-growing cybersecurity threat that organisations need to take seriously. The Rise of Deepfake-Driven Attacks in late 2023, a Hong Kong-based multinational was tricked into transferring more than $25 million after employees joined a video call with what appeared to be their company’s CFO.
The problem? The CFO was a deepfake, and so were the other “participants” in the meeting.
The scammers used AI-generated video and voice to stage a realistic interaction that fooled trained professionals. This is not an isolated case. Security researchers have warned that deepfakes are increasingly being used in:
- Phishing campaigns — convincing video or audio messages that appear to come from trusted executives.
- Disinformation operations — spreading fake news to manipulate public opinion or damage reputations.
- Corporate fraud — impersonating decision-makers to authorise payments, access data, or approve deals.
The technology is getting better, cheaper, and more accessible, which means the barrier to entry for criminals is almost non-existent.
Why Deepfakes Are Hard to Detect:
Unlike traditional malware or phishing emails, deepfakes exploit the human brain’s trust in visual and auditory cues. When we see and hear a familiar face and voice, we instinctively believe it.
AI-generated media is designed to bypass those instincts, creating hyper-realistic imitations that even trained eyes struggle to detect. While tools exist to analyse and spot manipulated content, they often lag behind the rapid improvements in generative AI. In a recent survey by Gartner, 78% of cybersecurity leaders said they were “concerned” or “very concerned” about deepfake threats, but less than 30% had any formal strategy to counter them.
The Business Risks
For organisations, the risks are not limited to fraud. Deepfakes also create:
- Reputation Damage: A fake video of a CEO making offensive remarks can destroy years of brand trust in hours.
- Data Security Threats: Impersonated employees can gain unauthorised access to sensitive systems.
- Financial Losses: As seen in recent cases, losses can run into the tens of millions.
- Legal Liability: Victims may pursue legal action if businesses fail to put safeguards in place. What Businesses Can Do to Prepare
While the threat may sound overwhelming, businesses are not powerless. Practical steps can reduce risk:
- Awareness Training — Educating employees to be sceptical of unusual requests, even if they appear to come from trusted sources, is the first line of defence. Staff should verify instructions especially financial ones through a secondary channel.
- Strengthen Verification Processes — Introduce multi-factor verification for sensitive actions like payment approvals, data transfers, or access to critical systems. A video call alone should never be enough.
- Invest in Detection Tools — AI-powered solutions can analyse inconsistencies in facial movements, voice modulation, and metadata to flag potential deepfakes. While not perfect, they add an extra layer of protection.
- Incident Response Planning — Prepare a response strategy for when not if a deepfake attack occurs. This should include communication protocols, legal considerations, and recovery plans.
The Future: Fighting AI with AI
The fight against deepfakes will likely be an AI vs AI arms race. Just as cybercriminals use AI to create fakes, cybersecurity professionals are developing AI tools that can spot them. For instance, research from Microsoft and Intel has shown promise in tools that detect subtle biological signals such as tiny changes in skin tone that AI-generated videos fail to replicate.
Governments are also beginning to respond. The European Union’s AI Act, expected to come into force soon, will set standards for labelling AI-generated content and penalise malicious use. However, regulation often moves slower than innovation, so businesses must take proactive steps today.
