Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to promoting girl-child education across Nigeria, highlighting the administration’s focus on inclusive learning, nutrition, and empowerment for all children.
In a statement issued by the Office of the Vice President on Tuesday, Shettima emphasized government initiatives such as the school feeding programme as key tools for boosting education and reducing the number of out of school children. During a meeting with a delegation from PLAN International, led by Director of Programme, Quality, and Innovation, Helen Mfonobong Idiong, the Vice President invited teenager Joy Ogah to symbolically take over his seat as “one-day Vice President,” allowing her to advocate for the girl child.
“We will continue our engagement with PLAN International and leverage the strength of government to act on your guidance on girl-child education,” Shettima said.
“In President Bola Tinubu, you have an ally you can trust and invest in. This administration is deeply committed to advancing girl child education.”
Shettima also praised First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, describing her as a symbol of what an empowered and supported girl child can achieve.
We are a gender-friendly government. We cannot disenfranchise half of our population and expect to grow as a nation,” he added.
PLAN International’s Helen Idiong highlighted that the organisation has supported over 11 million Nigerian children through education, entrepreneurship, and youth development programmes. She also commended the earlier advocacy that contributed to the removal of VAT on sanitary pads and diapers under the Tax Reforms Act.
The Vice President assured continued collaboration with PLAN International and other development partners to sustain policies that protect the rights and education of girls nationwide, reinforcing the administration’s focus on inclusive growth and gender equality.
